2019 Rookie Quarterback And Rookie Quarterback Records

Today I look at the 2019 rookie quarterbacks and their potential to set rookie quarterback records. I present the record situation for various quarterback statistics and the quarterback who is most likely to break the record based on their college production. Each statistic is followed by tables of the rookie quarterbacks  for that statistic in games, season, career and percent of games meeting a high threshold.  AT the conclusion I summarize the top rookies for each statistic and give my projection of how the discussed rookies will fare in the 53 man roster cuts.

Quarterback Rating

Otto Graham still holds the record for rookie passer rating at 112.1 for 14 games and 9 starts set in 1946.  The next rookie quarterbacks with 100+ season attempts and their rating are Dak Prescott (104.9), Deshaun Watson (103) and Robert Griffin (102.4). Among the new rookie quarterbacks Kyler Murray  holds the top college records for

  1. single game passing efficiency (348),
  2. season passing efficiency (199.2) and
  3. career passing efficiency  (181.3).

His career passing efficiency  and season passing efficiency are the second highest since 2000 for quarterbacks with 100 (career) and 50 (season) pass attempts. His game high passer rating is ninth best. None of the three NFL quarterbacks that trail Otto Graham for passer rating were ahead of Murray in these passer rating statistics. Kyler Murray had 76% of his games  with a 150+ passing efficiency rating. That is tops among signed 2019 draft prospects.

Contrary to this Bleacher Report ranking at 26th, I believe the Cardinals have a strong receiver corp in 2019. They added four offensive weapons from the draft in wide receivers Andy Isabella, Hakeem Butler, Keesean Johnson and tight end Caleb Wilson. From a 2018 receiving yards team market share perspective they got the two best in Isabella (47%) and Butler (42%). Butler was third in the nation in average receiving yards (22 yards). Isabella was second in the nation in 10+ receiving yards plays. In 20+ receiving yards plays they got the top three receivers: 1st KeeSean Johnson (26) and tied for second Hakeem Butler (25) and Andy Isabella (25). A whopping 75% of Butler’s receptions made 1st down. That was second best among 32 wide receiver draft prospects with a 30% receiving yards team market share. Then you add the fact that the Cardinals have 11 time Pro Bowler Larry Fitzgerald and you should have a decent receiving corp.

The college passing efficiency rating is different from the NFL passer rating and generates higher numbers. Otto Graham’s 112.1  rookie rating is the tenth highest season rating in NFL history. Only Nick Foles with a 119.2 at 24 years old had a higher rating at the same age as Graham or younger. Aaron Rodgers holds the highest season passer rating with a 122.5 at age 27. Since 1950 the average top passer rating has gone up every decade. I would say Murray has a good chance to break Graham’s rookie record for passer rating.

Completion Percentage

Dwayne Haskins had the best career pass completion percent in the signed 2019 draft class with a 70%.  That is good for eighth overall since 2000 for a minimum of 100 pass attempts. The highest is held by the late Tyler Hilinski with a 73.7.  The only current NFL quarterback that held a higher college completion percentage than Haskins is Colt McCoy who had a 70.3 at Texas.

The rookie record for pass completion percentage is held by Dak Prescott who had a 67.76% in 2016. Drew Brees holds four of the top five pass percentage completion seasons including the top one at 74.4% set in 2018.

In the 2018 NFL season there were 217 receivers with a minimum 25 targets. The Redskins had seven receivers to the league’s average of 6.7. The receivers are shown in the following table with the rank in the 217  based on their catch percentage.

183 Josh Doctson WR Yes 26 1-22 15 12 78 44 532 12.09 2 35.5 56.4% 6.82

From the table it is apparent going into 2019 the Redskins lack at the wide receiver position. In the 2019 draft the selected wide receivers Terry McLaurin in round three and Kelvin Harmon in round six. They also added undrafted free agent Steven Sims.

I don’t see Haskins as challenging Dak Prescott’s rookie completion percentage record. Haskins may not even get the starting quarterback role this year as he must beat out Colt McCoy and Case Keenum. I think Kyler Murray has a better chance to challenge the record. Murray follows Haskins among active players on the pass completion percent tables for season, career and percent of games at 60% and 65%.

Passing Yards And Touchdowns

Will Grier was chosen by the Panthers in round three of the 2019 NFL draft. He is the leader among the signed  2019 draft class in passing yards per game and passing touchdowns per game. Grier had the second highest passing yards game among signed draft players with 539 yards in a game the Mountaineers lost. He had the second (351 yards)  and fourth best (317 yards)  season for passing yards per game among the group. Grier also had the top career passing yards in the group of 2019 rookies (306 yards). He had 79% of his career games with 230+ passing yards  which is tops among 2019 rookies. In 2018 Grier had the second most passing yards per game.

The rookie record in passing yards per game is held by Nick Mullens with 284.6 yards in 2018. He is closely followed by Patrick Mahomes at 284.0 yards set in 2017.  A new record was set each of the last two years. In the nine decades of the NFL the leader’s average passing yards per game has increased every decade except for two.

Grier had the third most games with 5+ touchdowns in the group. He had the third most season passing touchdowns per game with 3.36. Grier had the highest career passing touchdowns per game in the group with 2.89. In the group Grier also had the highest percent of games with 4+ passing touchdowns with 36%.

The rookie records for passing touchdowns for quarterbacks that started more than one game is Deshaun Watson for touchdowns per game and Baker Mayfield for total touchdowns. Watson started six games and played in seven his rookie season. He had 19 touchdowns for 2.71 touchdowns per game.  Mayfield played in 14 games and started 13. He had 27 touchdowns his rookie year.  In 2018 Grier had the fifth most passing touchdowns.

Grier is my dark horse candidate to start some games in 2019. Cam Newton has endured shoulder injuries two of the last three seasons. His statistics over these three seasons are 59.8% completion percent, 65 TDs to 43 Interceptions, a quarterback rating of 83.3 and a 23-21 win/loss record. They made the playoffs one of those three seasons with a one and done outcome. He admitted after the 2018 season that he could not throw the ball further than 30 yards downfield. Newton has had off season surgery on the shoulder and hopes are that he returns to his old Pro-Bowl form.  Reports out of the start of training camp are that Newton connected on several deep balls and looked good. However if Newton falters during the season it is not out of the question that Grier could be called in. Pro Football Focus graded Grier as among the tops in the last two draft classes in overall grade and passing grade. The only two players to post higher numbers were  Baker Mayfield & Kyler Murray. If Grier starts at all he could challenge the rookie records for Per Game passing numbers on yards and touchdowns.

Rushing Average Yards

Kyler Murray holds the top spot among 2019 rookie quarterbacks in season rushing average (7.2 yards) and career rushing average (7.1 yards).  Murray had the highest rushing average among quarterbacks in 2018 with 7.15 yards. That average was also the 15th best for all rushers. Running backs Darrell Henderson and Ty Johnson were the only 2019 draft prospects with a better rushing average.  Murray made that average on 1001 yards which was tenth most of the 15 top averages.

The record for a rookie quarterback rushing average for over 10 attempts and a minimum of one game start is held by George Mira with 9.83 yards per attempt. He is closely followed by Michael Vick at 9.32 yards per attempt. Here is a table of the top ten rookie quarterbacks for rushing average.

Rk Player Year Age Draft Tm Lg G GS Att Yds Y/A TD Y/G
1 George Mira 1964 22 2-15, 18-137AFL SFO NFL 7 2 18 177 9.83 0 25.3
2 Michael Vick 2001 21 1-1 ATL NFL 8 2 31 289 9.32 1 36.1
3 Mike Phipps 1970 23 1-3 CLE NFL 14 1 11 94 8.55 0 6.7
4 Don Majkowski 1987 23 10-255 GNB NFL 7 5 15 127 8.47 0 18.1
5 Jack Concannon 1964 21 2-16, 1-1AFL PHI NFL 4 1 16 134 8.38 1 33.5
6 Bobby Douglass 1969 22 2-41 CHI NFL 11 7 51 408 8.00 2 37.1
7 Troy Aikman* 1989 23 1-1 DAL NFL 11 11 38 302 7.95 0 27.5
8 Clyde LeForce 1947 24 19-194 DET NFL 9 2 18 143 7.94 0 15.9
9 Parnell Dickinson 1976 23 7-183 TAM NFL 8 1 13 103 7.92 0 12.9
10 Bill Munson 1964 23 1-7, 16-126AFL RAM NFL 11 8 19 150 7.89 0 13.6

This would be a tough table for Murray to crack into. In games with 10+ rushing attempts Murray has averaged 7.8+ yards per attempt in only three games. Mira’s record set back in 1964 will survive another year in my opinion.

Here are my projections for the start of the season with regard to these featured rookies

Kyler Murray – Starting Quarterback

Dwayne Haskins – Backup to Case Keenum

Will Grier – Backup to Cam Newton after beating out Taylor Heinicke

Nick Fitzgerald – third quarterback after beating out Ryan Griffin

Jake Browning – third quarterback after Sean Mannion is released and Kyle Sloter wins the backup role.

Gardner Minshew – Backup to Nick Foles after Tanner Lee is released and Alex McGough gets the 3rd quarterback spot.

Drew Lock – Tough competition at the Broncos among the three backups ( for what will probably be two backup spots).  Too close to call. All three have a shot to make the team -Drew Lock, Kevin Hogan and Brett Rypien.

Tyree Jackson – I see Jackson winning the backup role and Matt Matt Barkley being cut.

Only six days to the Hall of Fame Game and the unofficial start of the 2019 season. It will be interesting to see how these rookie quarterbacks do, if they make the cuts and maybe some rookie records can be broken.
