Giant All Time Top Players By Category

Today I look at the Giant’s history and the top players by various statistics. I will generally use per attempt or per game to get the best consistent performers and not just the top players because they played longer. For many of the queries I will use a minimum of six games as that will include 2019 rookies. I will mention both of these qualifiers in the table title. If not stated then these qualifiers were not used.

There have been 62 quarterbacks in Giant history. Only 36 of those started a game. There have been only 27 quarterbacks that have 100+ career pass attempts.

Closing Thoughts
  1. Eli Manning has had a great career as a Giant. I feel he deserves to be in the Hall Of Fame. I also feel that he is the top quarterback in Giant history. To have passed for over 56,000 yards and have the third best completion percentage  and passer rating in Giant’s history is an amazing feat. He is also tops in passing yards per game. Again the longevity of his career and to make eighth all-time in touchdown percentage and yards per pass attempt are testaments to the best Giant quarterback.
  2. The Giants have built a new team over the last four years. There are only two players that have been on the team before 2016 – Eli Manning and Zak DeOssie. Only three were acquired in 2016 and five in 2017. The rest of the team became a Giant over the last two years. That is 63  players. Yet in the lists of All-Time Giant leaders gathered here there are sixteen current Giants listed. They have a small sample size but so far their per game performance has been outstanding.
  3. Daniel Jones has started only four games but as a rookie he has made the future look promising. He has made top ten in six of the eight quarterback tables assembled here. On the other two tables he is in the top 52% of the 27 Giant quarterbacks that have 100+ career pass attempts.
  4. Saquon Barkley is another bright spot for the Giant’s future. He leads all Giant running backs in rushing yards per game and in yards from scrimmage per game. Not only that but he is second among all Giant backs in rushing yards per attempt. He is also tops in touchdowns per game. He comes in fifth (RB catch %) and ninth (rush TDs/Att) all-time in the other two running back tables.
  5. The best Giant’s receiver of all-time is probably a more widely contested subject than whether Eli should make the Hall Of Fame.  A case can be made for at least six receivers. Beckham leads statistically. However he played in only one post season game in which he did not play well. In that game he had only four receptions for 28 yards, zero touchdowns, a 36% catch rate and two first downs.  I cannot see him getting the nod over receivers that helped lead the team to Super Bowl victories. Amani Toomer leads in receiving yards and receptions but on a per target or game analysis he fails to make most of the top ten lists. He played 13 seasons as a Giant but longevity alone should not you the best. I vote for Victor Cruz. Cruz still holds the Giants single season receiving yards record with 1,536 yards on the Super Bowl team of the 2011 season. He did that starting only seven games. In the NFC title game that season he was the lead receiver on either team with 10 receptions for 142 yards and eight first downs. The next year he set career highs for receptions and touchdowns and made the Pro Bowl. Cruz is third all-time in receiving yards per game, fifth in catch percentage, fourth in receiving yards per target and tenth in receiving touchdowns per target.
    1. Amani  Toomer
    2. Plaxico Burress
    3. Odell Beckham
    4. Victor Cruz
    5. Mario Manningham
    6. Hakeem Nicks
  6. The Giants new receiving corp make a good showing on the all-time lists above.  Sterling Shepard comes in catch percentage and makes eleventh in receiving yards per target. Evan Engram and even Golden Tate show up on the lists. Small sample size but a good start that hopefully they continue to build on.
  7. Rhett Ellison tops all Giants tight ends in catch percentage with a all-time Giant high of 72% for a tight end. Engram comes in sixth with a respectable 62.6%.
  8. Lawrence Taylor is the Giant sack leader per game with has an impressive 0.72 sacks per game over 184 games.  His 0.72 sacks per game comes in at eleventh in the league among the top 300 total sack leaders since 1982. There are four current Giants on the list of the top 19 all-time Giants in sacks per game. Included is Marcus Golden whose five sacks in 2019 comes out to 0.83 sacks per game which tops all Giants albeit on a small sample size.
  9. Some of the Giant leaders in solo tackles include Pepper Johnson who had 5.46 solo tackles per game on 106 games. Also included is Carl Banks with 4.97 per game on 126 games. Current Giants Antoine Bethea, Jabrill Peppers and Alec Ogletree make the top 19 with smaller game numbers.
  10. Five current Giants make the top sixteen Giants in quarterback hits per game. Marcus Golden leads the list with 1.8 hits per game.
  11. Current Giant Janoris Jenkins leads the list of all time Giants in passes defended per game with over one pass defended per game in 46 games.

I  hope you enjoy the data. The Giants have some promising players on a very new roster.  They appear to be playing hard  and hopefully their initial productivity continues. Enjoy the week seven games!
