Just waiting for the game today and I thought I would look at some Giant stats. I have some posts pertinent to the Giants vs Rams tomorrow at A Low Percent Outcome and Giants Streaks . If you want some trivia unrelated to the game that is this post. I thought i would look at the Giants combine data for their draft picks. The site Pro Football Reference allows you to query on combine data going back to 2000. Lets look at the current team ad what players fall in the top ten for combine data. From 2000 to 2020 there are 129 Giant draft picks listed with their combine data, The following players highlighted are based on their combine data and goes back to 2020.

Height

The tallest player selected by the Giants since 2000 based on combine data was this year’s Matt Peart at 6’7″.Peart had a 90.1 run blocking grade from Pro Football Focus in his 2019 college season. “On tape looks like one of the most athletic tackles in the class.”  “Peart’s arms are some of the longest the Combine has ever seen.”

The Giants have two other current players in the Giants top ten with Daniel Jones at 6’5″ and Andrew Thomas also at 6’5″, Daniel Jones was the second tallest quarterback at the 2019 combine. Eli Manning was also 6.5″ and the fifth tallest quarterback at his combine. That’s why Their Giants.

Weight

The heaviest player selected by the Giants since the 2000 combine is also on this season’s team. He is Dexter Lawrence at 342 lbs. Lawrence was the heaviest player at the 2019 combine. Lawrence made the 2019 NFL All-Rookie Team.In 2019 he had 5 quarterback knockdowns, 2.5 sacks, 15 pressures and 5 hurries. No defensive tackle 22 years old or younger had more pressures  in 2019.

Vertical Jump

This Giant team has three players that are in the top ten Giant players in the vertical jump since 2000. Saquon Barkley is at number two, Barkley had the top vertical jump among running backs at the 2018 combine. The Power Clean weight lift is viewed by many as a good exercise to increase vertical jump. Here we see Barkley doing a 405 lb power clean. At a body weight of 233 that is an immense power clean weight.

While a vertical jump is quite different from hurdling defenders, those same leg muscles have got to help both. Also in the top ten for vertical jump among all Giants since 2000 were Sterling Shepard at five and Darius Slayton at six.

40 Yard Dash

Making the top ten among Giants is Darius Slayton at nine and Saquon Barkley at ten. Darius Slayton’s forty time was twelfth best among all players at the 2019 combine. Slayton’s speed paid off in 2019 where his yards before the catch per reception of 11.5 was fourteenth best in the league. This season his 14.8 yards before the catch per reception is seventh best in the league.

Bench Press

Will Hernandez comes in fourth in the Giants top ten players since 2000 in the bench press. He was third among all players at the 2018 combine and the top offensive player. Hernandez made the NFL 2018 All-Rookie Team and the Pro Football Focus All Rookie Team. His combine spider graph shows a stout powerful guard. Add in physical play and a nasty streak and you have the proverbial “hog molly”.

Also in the top ten are Dexter Lawrence at seven and B.J.Hill at eight.

Broad Jump

Darius Slayton leads all Giants since 2000 in combine broad jump results. He was seventh among all players in the 2019 combine for the broad jump. This is Slayton’s third appearance in the Giants top ten combine events since 2000. His events he excelled in show speed and explosiveness. This has translated into his game where it matters. Among active players for their first 17 career games Slayton ranks sixth in receiving touchdowns with ten. That is fifth if you count only wide receivers.

Two other current Giants made the Giants top ten in the broad jump since 2000. They are Lorenzo Carter at third and Carter Coughlin at ninth.

Three Cone Drill

Julian Love is the only current Giant to make the top ten Giants since 2000 in the 3 cone drill. He comes in at number six. Love was fifth in the three cone among all players in the 2019 combine and fourth among defensive backs. Love was picked by Pro Football Focus as the Giants most underrated player in his 2019 rookie season. He made a switch to a new position of safety and played admirably. Love was a standout corner at Notre Dame. He finished 2019 with an NFL coverage grade of 84.5, the third-best coverage rating on the team among those Giants defenders who were targeted at least 30 times in the passing game. Love has had a shaky start to 2020 but he is currently dealing with a knee injury and may miss the Rams game.

Shuttle Drill

No current Giant made the Giants top ten since 2000 in the Shuttle Drill. The best showing was Julian Love at twelfth.

There are a total of eighteen appearances of current Giants in the top ten of Giants combine events and statistics since 2000. An even distribution across all years would have ten per year. So the current Giant team is well represented as an athletic Giant team.

Enjoy the Game today. Go Giants!
