Notes on the Giant’s First Win of 2020

The Giants had their first win of the season squeaking out a victory against Washington 20-19. They had only 112 yards passing.

Their 132 yards rushing were due in large part to 74 yards from Daniel Jones.  Jones had 7 carries for 74 yards including a 49 yard run. Jones was fourth among quarterbacks this season with more than ten rush attempts in yards per attempt. He was sixth in rushing yards. He new standings should be higher.

Darius Slayton was the high yards receiver with two receptions for 41 yards. He had a touchdown reception on a beautiful pass by Daniel Jones to the corner of the end zone. Jones’ 23 yard touchdown pass extended his passing touchdowns of 21+ yards to 13 for the 2019-2020 seasons. Unless someone else in the top ten score a 21+ yard touchdown pass Jones will move into a two way tie for third place.

Golden Tate broke his active streak of six games with four receptions by only having one reception. Tate still is third in active streaks of games with a reception with 120.

Blake Martinez had 14 tackles in the game. He passed Jessie Armstead for the top Giant in tackles in the first six games of a season since 1987.

James Bradberry had an interception and extended his passes defended total on the season to ten. He most likely still leads the league in that stat but we need to see how the other games play out.

Rookie Linebacker, Tae Crowder, had the second most tackles with 10 and a career high for both tackles and solo tackles with six. He returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

DT Dalvin Tomlinson had eight tackles, one solo tackle and a quarterback hit. Tomlinson is an emerging star on the  team. In week three against the 49ers Tomlinson was the highest graded Giant by Pro Football Focus. That game he had a team high 4 pressure and three run stops.

The site profootballreference.com produces an approximate value (AV) as an attempt to put a single number on the seasonal value of a player at any position from any year (since 1950). The higher the AV the more valuable the player is to the team. A seasonal AV of 7 appeared to be a good cutoff point to separate the more valuable players. This cutoff was based on players that made the NFL All Rookie Team and their AV. Using an AV of seven or better I extracted a list of all the Giants that met that mark and the number of seasons they did. The players with the most seasons are shown here with the count of seasons at AV 7+ on the Giants, the number of years they were Giants and the percent of seasons at AV 7+. I took the players from 1960 on.

The next table shows the Giants that had 7+ AV for each of the seasons they were on the Giants (since 1960). The table only shows the top years down to three years. Dalvin Tomlinson has made AV of 7+ every year he has been on the team for three years.

That was just a sidetrack on AV highlighting Dalvin Tomlinson’s accomplishment.

Both Washington and the Giants broke their active streaks of games without a passing touchdown.

If the Cowboys lose to the Cardinals on Monday night the Giants will be only one game out of first with their 1-5 record.
