A Look to the Giants 2021 Draft with a Tough Game Approaching

It is a slow football week. The Giants at 1-6 play the 5- 2 Buccaneers this Monday night. The Giants are 28th in offensive yards per play while the Bucs are 1st in defensive yards per play.  The Bucs are 6th in defensive passing TD% allowed to the Giants 30th in offensive passing TD%. Tampa leads the league in points differential with +80 points. The Giants are 29t with a -52 points differential. I will watch as always and root for the upset of the season so far but I am not going to do a post on this game.

Instead I ran the Fanspeak mock draft simulator and here are my Giants picks for the 2021 draft. I don’t argue about who is available when, if the player is there I will take him.

R1: OT Penei Sewell – Oregon

Labelled as a “generational talent”. Said to be the best tackle prospect since4 time consecutive  Pro-Bowler Jake Long. He’s only allowed one sack the last two years. Pro Football Focus had him graded as the third best player following the 2019 season.

R2: LB Micah Parsons – Penn State

One of six finalists for the 2019 Butkus Award honoring college’s best linebackers. Pro Football Focus lists Parsons as the most complete linebacker the outlet has ever graded ahead of an NFL Draft, giving him a 94.8 run-defense grade, a 91.4 pass-rushing grade, and credits Parsons with just 11 missed tackles in 198 attempts. What Penei Sewell is to the offensive tackle position, Parsons looks like for linebackers.

R3: TE Kyle Pitts – Florida

Pitts became just the third FBS tight end since 1996 to post 150-plus receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns in a game. Urban Meyer said he may be the best non-quarterback player in the country. He is currently third in the nation in receiving touchdowns. He is 6-6, 240 lbs and has blazing speed.

R4: LB Nick Bolton – Missouri

SEC’s Top Graded Linebacker (91.1 in 2019) and Leading Tackler – 8.92/game (2019). He’s already got 18 stops and seven pressures in four games this season. He had two interceptions in one game in 2019 and has 10 passes defended over the last two seasons. An all-around linebacker. Over the last two seasons Bolton is the only player with 95+ solo tackles, 10 passes defended, two sacks and ten tackle for loss.

R6: S Greg Eisworth – Iowa State

First Team All Big-12 (Coaches) each of the last two seasons. One of only three players that over the last three seasons had 100 solo tackles, 16 passes defended, 8 tackle for loss and two interceptions. He was the 2018 Big-12 Newcomer of the Year. He was voted as a team captain he s=red shirt junior season.

R6: WR Marquez Stevenson

Top ten in the American Conference in Receiving Touchdowns and Yards each of the last three seasons. He is sixth in the nation in kickoff yards per return and had two returns for touchdowns in 2019 and one this season. Stevenson was tie for eighth in the nation in 2019 with 5 receptions of 50+ yards. He was American All Conference First team the last two seasons.

I would be ecstatic with that draft! 🙂 It has best players at positions of need. Here was my take on the 2021 core team for the Giants The Giants Core Team For 2021 and this draft fits in nicely with some of their needs. Go Giants! Here is hoping for an upset!

The Giants are 12.5 point underdogs. The Giants have played .14 games as underdogs by 12.5 points or more. They won three of them. Oh, and one of those wins was a Super Bowl! The last of those wins was in 2017 when the Giants easily beat the Broncos 23-10. That game the Broncos had three offensive turnovers to zero for the Giants. The Broncos had 366 passing yards to 118 for the Giants. On any given Sunday any team can beat any team!

Even if the Giants lose here are some current streaks to root for to continue:

  1. Daniel Jones is 13th in active streaks with a completion percentage of 60% or better with four games.
  2. Sterling Shepard is seventh in active streaks of two receptions with 35 games.
  3. Golden Tate is third in active streaks of one reception with 130 games. Julio Jones has only two games on him. Larry Fitzgerald is in another realm with 259 games.
  4. James Bradberry is one of five players with an active streak of an interception with two games.
  5. Evan Engram leads the Giants in an active streak of two games with 30 receiving yards.

With Will Hernandez out with Covid-19 it will be interesting to see how the Giant run game goes.  According to ESPN, has the seventh best run-block win rate in the NFL for a guard.

That’s all I have. Enjoy the game! Go Giants!
