Giant versus Rams Post Game Notes

With the loss today the Giants move to 0-4 and are one of only six Giant teams out of 95 to start a season at 0-4. . Those teams were 1976, 1979, 1987, 2013, 2017 and now 2020. The 47 points the Giants have scored in their first 4 games is the lowest in the league. It is 78th out of 81 Giant season 4 game starts listed in descending points scored since 1940.

The turnover margin in the Giants/Ram game was zero as both teams had a turnover. The Giants offensive turnover did not come till the last minute of the game. It appeared that had Daniel Jones ran instead of passed he may have made the first down. But with Jones’ heroics today in running the football I would not fault him for that. Jones ran 6 times for 45 yards including a 13 yarder.

The Giants were unable to keep Goff to an under 100 quarterback rating. The defense played a good game but had one blown coverage that cost them a long play for a touchdown.

Golden Tate broke his four game streak with five receptions in a game. He had only four in the Rams game. Blake Martinez broke his two game streak of a sack. However Martinez played a good game. He led the Giants in total and solo tackles. He made an impressive stop on a screen pass to the Rams running back where Martinez came 10 yards downfield to stop him for little to no gain.

Daniel Jones extended his streak of rushing for 20+ yards to five games now. Only Lamar Jackson has a longer active streak with 19 games. Russel Wilson had an active streak of six games but he broke that streak today with only 5 yards rushing. Daniel Jones extended his streak of no passing touchdowns to three games which ties Eli Manning‘s streak. The longest Giant streak of no passing touchdowns is four held by Scott Brunner and Craig Morton.

The Giants extended their streak of games with 2+ sacks to four games. They were one of only nine teams with such an active streak as of last week. It remains to be seen how many teams continue that streak.

Today was the first time this year the Rams were held to under 20 points. The Rams averaged just 28 yards per offensive drive. This against a team that Pro Football Focus reported after three weeks as having a top ten player at each position on offense.

Giant Kyler Fackrell had a monster game with 4 solo tackles, one sack, 3 tackles for loss and one quarterback hit. Giant defensive tackle Austin Johnson also played very well. Johnson had 2 solo tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a quarterback hit.

Wayne Gallman had six carries for 45 yards including a 26 yarder. He tied Daniel Jones for the top rusher with 45 yards.

Closing Thoughts: Daniel Jones showed again his toughness and competitive spirit. His runs were very impressive. Jones had one where he looked swallowed up by defenders but broke loose for a nice gain. The defense played hard against a good team and kept us in the game to the end. The offense and Daniel Jones kept drives alive and us in the game. The Giants bounced back from an ugly loss to the 49ers to fly cross country and play down to the wire in a game where they were 13 point underdogs. The NFC East after four weeks is led by a team with 1 or maybe 1.5 wins. The Giants joined the five other Giant teams that started 0-4. None of those other five teams made the playoffs. This year with such a weak NFC East the Giants could be the first 0-4 Giant team to make the playoffs. Next week’s first divisional matchup will be key. Go Giants!
