Rookie Starters And The Giant’s Streak

In this new environment for the NFL due to the virus there is a rookie feat that will be harder to achieve this season. That is for a rookie to start all 16 games. Over the last five seasons the Giants lead the league in the number of rookies that have started every game. The Giants have six such rookies and had at least one in each of the five seasons. The next closest team is the Saints who have had four rookies start all games covering three seasons.

There are six teams that have zero rookies started all games over the last five seasons. Those teams are the Packers, Texans, Rams, Steelers, Seahawks and Ravens. After those six ten teams have only had one rookie start all games. That amounts to half the league with one or no rookies starting a whole season. Next comes six teams with two rookies and eight teams with three. Followed by the Saints at four and the Giants at six.

Here are the Giant rookie starters that started all 16 games.

Player Year Age Draft
Dexter Lawrence 2019 22 1-17
Saquon Barkley 2018 21 1-2
Will Hernandez 2018 23 2-34
Dalvin Tomlinson 2017 23 2-55
Sterling Shepard 2016 23 2-40
Landon Collins 2015 21 2-33

It is interesting to note that four of the Giants six rookies were not chosen in the first round but rather round two. Of the 56 rookies that started all games over the last five seasons almost half (27) were not first round picks. The Giants had the most rookies starting all games that were not first round picks. The Bears had two rookies that started all games that were day three picks. That was the most of any team. They were safeties Eddie Jackson (2017) and Adrian Amos (2015). Of the Giant rookies that started all games the Giants have five of the six still starting. The most any team can claim is three of their starting rookies are still starting.

Looking forward the best bets on the Giants to continue their streak would be with first round pick tackle Andrew Thomas and second round pick safety Xavier McKinney. Thomas started every year of his three years at Georgia for a total of 41 starts. Over the three years he did not start in only one game in 2018 and one in 2019. Thomas seems like a good bet to continue the Giant streak. In 3 years at Alabama, Xavier McKinney played in 41 games with starts in each of his last 28 games. McKinney is the only FBS player over the last 2 seasons with 100 solo tackles, 6 sacks, 5 interceptions and 15 passes defended. McKinney appears to have the skills to also start from day 1 and the availability to start all games.
