Week Six Thoughts And Stats on the Giants and NFC East

Some stats and thoughts heading into week six for the Giants and NFC East.

  1. Washington and the Eagles lead the league in 3 and out drives with 18 and 14 respectively. The Giants have the least in the division with 7.
  2. The Eagles and Cowboys lead the league in number of drives that resulted in either a missed field goal, a fumble, an interception or a blocked field goal. The Eagles have 13 and Dallas has 12. The Giants come in at fourth most with 10.
  3. Washington and the Giants both have active streaks without a passing touchdown. Washington with 2 games and the Giants with 4.Incidentally, Washington went three games last season without scoring any touchdowns. The Giants went two games this year.
  4. Daniel Jones‘ On target percentage increased from 71.1% in 2019 to 75.3% in 2020. His bad throw percentage decreased from 17.9% to 16.5%. This seasons bad throw percentage ranks 18th in the league. His completed air yards per pass attempt rose from 3.5 to 3.6. It may not sound like much but it is in the right direction and the top spot is only 5.5. Interesting to note that Patrick Mahomes air yards per pass attempt is also 3.6. However Mahomes has a 6.3 yards after the catch per completion for sixth in the league. Jones has a 4.1 for 24th in the league. Kansas has two players in the top twelve in YAC per reception and a total of 4 in the top 50. The Giants have only Evan Engram in the top 100 at 61st. (Side Note: Don’t trade Evan Engram. He is a much better player than what teams seem to offer lately for players. The best you would probably get is a third round pick. He is better than that.) The Giants need a good wide receiver in the draft.
  5. LB Blake Martinez is tie for fourth in the league in solo tackles and is fifth in total tackles. He has the second lowest yards per target on the Giants. His five tackles for loss are second most on the team. Through the first five games of a season since 1994 (started recording solo tackles) he is eighth  among Giant linebackers in solo tackles. Since 1987 (first recorded) Martinez is second among all Giant players in total tackles thru the first five games. Only Jessie Armstead in 1999 had more with two more.
  6. CB James Bradberry leads the league in passes defended with nine. His YAC allowed per completion is only 2.47 yards and his completion percentage allowed of 56.7% is second best on the team. His yards per target is third best on the team with a linebacker at second. Pro Football Focus has Bradberry ranked at 2nd out of 116 cornerbacks. His overall grade of 85.7 is the highest of his five year career. His coverage grade of 87.3 is 2nd among 111 cornerbacks.
  7. Kicker Graham Gano has made 13 of 14 field goals with the only missing being a 57 yard attempt. His 92.9% field goal percent this year is tie for second best among kickers with 10+ attempts.
  8. DT Dalvin Tomlinson is one of only two defensive tackles that in 2020 have one sack, 12 solo tackles, 19 total tackles, 3 quarterback hits and 5 tackle for a loss. With his two passes defended Dalvin beats the other DT Akeem Hicks who has only one pass defended.
  9. Darius Slayton is tenth in the league in yards before the catch per reception with 12.9 yards. His 15.9 yards per reception is 20th in the league and best on the Giants. Slayton’s 19 receiving first downs is tie for twelfth in the league. His receptions per game, yards per target and receiving touchdowns are all best on the Giants.
  10. The Giants are the only NFC East team favored this weekend. If Vegas is right the Giants could sit one game out of first after the dust settles. Go Giants!
