The Giants and Explosive Touchdown Plays

Over the last two seasons the players on the Chiefs, Bills and Titans are the elite in the league in players with two or more of plays of 20+ yard touchdowns. The Chiefs players total 36 plays, the Bills 31 and the Titans 29. The Chiefs have two players with double digit plays with Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman.

The next tier runs from 20 – 25 plays and is comprised of 12 teams that includes the Giants with 24 plays. Darius Slayton is tie at fifth in the league with eight 20+ yard touchdowns in that span. Dallas is also in this tier with 25 plays. Washington is in the next tier of 12-18 plays with 15. The Eagles are in the bottom tier of four teams with 9 or less plays. The Eagle players have had eight.

Of the top two tiers the two teams that helped themselves the most in this area in the draft would be the Giants and the Ravens. The Giants drafted Toney who in 2020 was seventh in receiving touchdowns with ten. Five of those ten touchdowns were 20+ yards. Toney also was third in the nation in scrimmage plays of 20+ yards with 21. The Ravens drafted Rashod Bateman who in 2019 was 11th in 20+ yard scrimmage plays with 22 and he was 19th in receiving touchdowns with 11. The Ravens players over the last two seasons had 22 plays of 20+ yard touchdowns.

In addition the Giants have some players that missed significant playing time over the last two seasons. Saquon Barkley had four plays over the two years but only played in 15 games. Kenny Golladay had five plays but only played in 21 games. Getting these players back healthy should also provide a boost to their explosive touchdown plays.

The quarterback is another important factor in explosive touchdown plays. Over the last two seasons Daniel Jones was twelfth in touchdowns for passing plays of 20+ yards with 16. His 23% of touchdowns to 20+ yard passing plays ranked seventh. It was fourth among starting quarterbacks.

The pieces are in place for 2021 to see the Giants excel in explosive touchdown plays and move up the list maybe even into the top tier.
