Positive Signs as the Giants Look to Break their Eagles Losing Streak

There have been nine contests between the Giants and the Eagles since 2016 which is the earliest year that actually had a player that is still on the Giants. Of those nine games the Giant record is 1-8. However here are some bright spots for the Giants last meeting with the Eagles this season compared to the other 8 games. The game on 10-22-2020 compared to the other eight meetings had –

  1. Least amount of Giant incomplete passes (10).
  2. Most rushing yards (160 yards).
  3. Best rushing yards margin (+64 yards)
  4. Second best points differential (-1)
  5. Second best rushing yards per attempts (7.27 yards).
  6. Second most rushing first downs.
  7. Second most opponent passes intercepted (1).
  8. Third most touchdowns.
  9. Third best completion percentage (66.7%).
  10. Fourth best score margin after 3 quarters (+ 4 points).
  11. Most opponent sacked (3).
  12. Third least opponent rushing yards per attempts (3.69 yards)
  13. Second most opponent penalty yards.
  14. Fourth least opponent 3rd down conversion percent (30.8%)

Since 2016 the Giants have lost 18 of 28 division games. In the NFC that number of division losses is only eclipsed by Washington (20) and the Panthers (20). In the AFC it is topped by the Jets (21), Chargers (19), Bengals (19), Browns (19). It is tied with the Jaguars (18). The Giants losing streak with the Eagles goes back to the first meeting in 2016.  This season the Giants had the lowest points differential (-1) among all those losses. This is a prime game to break the losing streak.

Three of Daniel Jones‘ five games since week five were his highest passer ratings of the year, All those three games were against division rivals. The last three games had the highest total yards for offense of the season. Weeks seven and eight were two of the Giants three highest passing touchdown games of season. Week nine was the Giants first turnover free game of the season and Daniel Jones‘ second turnover free game of his career. Weeks seven and nine were the second and third lowest opponent passer ratings allowed of the season. In week nine against a talented Washington defense the Giants offensive line had their highest weekly rank of the season in pass blocking efficiency by Pro Football Focus. Over the last four weeks the Giants have won two of their four games and lost the other two by one and two points, Those games were against teams with strong defenses – Washington, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay. Since week five the Giants have won two games and lost the other three by a combined points differential of only -6 points. These are positive recent trends that hopefully continue into the Eagle game.

Players are stepping up and contributing at a high level. In week nine the Giants rushed for a season-high 166 yards, as both Wayne Gallman (14 carries for 68 yards) and Alfred Morris (9 carries for 67 yards) put together strong performances on the ground. Wide receiver Austin Mack had four receptions for 72 yards. Against Washington tackle Matt Peart graded out as the highest player on the offensive line by Pro Football Focus. He allowed zero pressures. Free agent signings James Bradberry and Blake Martinez are second in the league in passes defended and first in total tackles respectively. In the last four weeks Leonard Williams has had 11 of his 15 quarterback pressures of the season. Leonard Williams is sixth among defensive tackles in quarterback hits and pressures on the season. In week eight Sterling Shepard had the fifth highest game receptions of his career against Tampa Bay with eight. In week five against Dallas, Darius Slayton had eight receptions and a 72.7% catch percentage.

The Giants are a solid team heading in the right direction. Last season the Jets and the Falcons started the season at 2-7. They had a total point differential of -117 and -89 respectively for their seven losses. They both finished the season at 7-9. The Giants in comparison have a total points differential of -55 for their seven losses and -14 for their last four. If the Jets could do it with a -117 points differential so can the Giants with a points differential of half that. Whose to say the Giants could not win versus the Eagles, Bengals, Cardinals, Browns and Dallas to finish 7-9. That may even win the division. It all starts this Sunday. Go Giants!
