Ten Positives From the Giants First Game of 2020

Though the Giants lost the opening game against the Steelers there were some positives to take from the game.

  1. Daniel Jones played a good game. He is fearless and a true competitor. He hung in the pocket under intense pressure. Jones had some nice first down runs fighting to keep the drives alive. He had a beautiful touchdown pass to Darius Slayton. His quarterback rating was 79.2. That was better than Tom Brady, Mathew Stafford, Carson Wentz, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray to name a few in week one.
  2. Darius Slayton had over 100 yards receiving and 17 yards per reception. His receiving yards is eleventh in the league so far in week one. He is one of only six players with two receiving touchdowns in week one. Slayton had six catches on six targets.
  3. Rookie Andrew Thomas played every snap at Left Tackle and did a decent job especially in pass protection.
  4. Leonard Williams had a sack, a tackle for loss, two quarterback hits, a pass defensed and five tackles. One play saw him pushing his defender all the way back to the quarterback and getting the sack.
  5. Jabrill Peppers did a good job on punt returns.He had a 20 yard return that almost went for more.
  6. Blake Martinez led the Giants in total tackles and solo tackles. He made many near the line of scrimmage.
  7. The Giants were a decent 8 for 15 on third down conversions.
  8. The Giant interior defensive line played well with Williams and Dexter Lawrence both getting a sack.
  9. Of the 22 Giant starters 13 were new from the starters in last season’s opener. Fourteen of the twenty two starters were 25 years or younger.
  10. The Giants are tie for second in the NFC East, The Giants play the Bears in week two and Washington plays the Cardinals. The Giants could move into first in the NFC East next week.
